Road closed signs are usually put up due to potential hazards like flooding, road maintenance, or a giant hole. However, some California drivers ignore the Road signsand in this case, despite very clear signage, at least three different people ignored this warning and their cars were totaled.
The California Highway Patrol shared a social media post stating that “Road Closed” signs are not recommendations. The road in question was Kasson Road between Durham Ferry Road and the entrance to the San Joaquin River Club in Tracy, California. In the photo shared in the publication, you can see what looks like a honda crv half sunk under a substantial amount of water.
Drivers ignore traffic signs and end up with totaled cars in California
The next day CHP posted again, this time showing that the road had completely collapsed and a large chasm had developed. «DO NOT try to drive around the barricades“, they stated. For those who may not have seen the post, the CHP added barriers and signs to the road. But that didn’t stop a Volkswagen Passat driver from ending up in the hole on January 26.
Sarcastically, CHP began their incident report with “THIS CAN NOT BE REAL! We are speechless. If only there were signs and/or barriers that could have prevented this…”. Of course, in addition to showing the vandalized VW, they also showed the signage again. Still, this kept happening.
Just two days later, on January 28, a driver of Ford F-150 Ignoring the signs, he drove around the barriers and straight into the sinkhole. No amount of four-wheel drive will be able to get them out of this one. In fact, it appears that the hood came off the truck upon contact with the other side of the hole.
The CHP also did not take kindly to the accident. Not only did they issue a citation to the driver, but they also took to Facebook again to condemn this situation. “It has happened again. We can’t make these things up. This was 100 percent preventable. There are no excuses. Signals are clear, visible and unobstructed“, they specified. The lesson is simple: when the sign says road closed, there’s a good reason for that, don’t try to go through it.
