It has been a while since Mitsubishi introduced a facelifted version of the D:5 Delica in 2018. With its new styling in the form of Mitsubishi’s Dynamic Shield design language, the off-road ready people carrier that comes with AWC four-wheel drive system has generated considerable interest among fans and buyers, even in markets outside of Japan.
But until now the Mitsubishi D: 5 Delica is still a forbidden fruit for other markets such as the United States. Sure, it’s currently being exported to other markets like Thailand, but it’s still very limited. It doesn’t help that production is endemic to Japan at this point either.
This begs the question: is there any chance that Delica will be offered in other markets like the US?
Speaking with Executive Vice President of Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corp. (MMPC) Takanobu Suzuki during the 2022 Asia Cross Country Rally flag ceremony and essentially Ralliart’s return to rally racing, we now have the answer.
Suzuki-san mentioned that Delica comes exclusively with a right-hand drive configuration. But the company isn’t closing its doors on offering people carriers, especially in countries that need them.
“Mitsubishi Delica D:5 is exported in limited quantities to several countries such as Thailand. Used as a company car for international companies. In the Philippines, currently not available. However, we have studied the marketability of this model in the van segment, which is one of the largest segments.
“For now, Mitsubishi is focusing on the SUV and pickup segments where we will launch a new pickup and two new SUVs in the coming years. We will continue to study the feasibility of including the van in the current lineup,” said Suzuki-san.
The Mitsubishi XFC Concept is one of two SUVs to be launched in the near future.
