Audi is working on new shapes of wheels using its exclusive technology. The tires will remain circular in the near future, but their design could change.
The German brand began to use artificial intelligence technology to design new tires. Now, Audi hasn’t completely replaced its designers with computers.
What happens is that using their technology called FelGAN, designers create new concepts thanks to AI.
FelGAN is the combination of the German word Felge from “edge” and Gan meaning “generative Adversarial Networks”. GANs are a self-learning computer program that uses two algorithms to compete as opponents during a «training stage«.

These algorithms learn from your mistakes, which allows them to continually improve. The process will make the creations “so deceptively real, that even the human eye cannot, or barely, distinguish them from the actual photos«.
Tires designed with this technology will serve as inspiration for Audi workers, as well as allowing them to trade in new versions and variations. Ultimately, the tool will allow you to play with shape, color, surface structure, and more.
It is worth mentioning that the new design process does not rely only on AI ideas, but designers can feed the program with their own ideas and photos.
The final step is to turn the virtual designs into something tangible by producing a prototype of the wheel. It will be made of plastic or aluminum, manufactured with a high-tech milling machine.
