suzuki has finally revealed the long-awaited 5-door Jimny at the Auto Expo 2023 in Delhi, India. The longer and more practical variant of the Jimny will be sold in Suzuki’s global markets, including India, Africa and Latin America.
As expected, the Suzuki Jimny 5-door it shares most of its design with the 3-door model. Other than the additional doors and longer wheelbase, the only styling update is the chrome grille, as the boxy shape, lighting units, unpainted bumpers, and fender flares remain identical.
Suzuki Jimny 5-door debuts
The Suzuki Jimny 5 doors it measures 3,985 mm (156.9 in) long, 1,645 mm (64.8 in) wide and 1,720 mm (67.7 in) tall, with a 2,590 mm (102 in) wheelbase.
This means that the new Jimny model is 340 mm (13.4 inches) longer than the global-spec 3-door, with all the extra length going to the extended wheelbase. The rest of the dimensions are practically identical.
According to the specifications, the SUV weighs between 1,195 and 1,210 kg (2,635 and 2,668 pounds), which is between 75 and 125 kg (165 and 276 pounds) heavier compared to the 3-door version.
As for the interior, there more space for rear passengers which benefit from newly designed seats. The front seats can still recline upright, making the Jimny a perfect spot for a quick nap.
Cargo space is still quite small at 208 liters (7.3 cu ft), rising to 332 liters (11.7 cu ft) when the rear seats are folded down according to the press release. Which is an increase over the 3-door model’s 85 liter (3 cu ft) trunk in a four-seat configuration, though it falls short of the 863 liter (30.5 cu ft) space in the rear of the Jimny LCV two.
The family dash brings a 7-inch or 9-inch touchscreen for infotainment that is compatible with Android Auto / Wireless Apple Carplay and has a rear view camera. The five-door Jimny has two versions available, Alpha and Zeta, with the top-spec model adding LED lights, fog lights, 15-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, automatic climate control, a 9-inch infotainment system, and a four-speaker Arkamys sound system. Both models have six airbags.
Power train and marketing
Regarding the motor train, under the hood of the model there is a 1.5 liter gasoline engine naturally aspirated generating 103 hp (77 kW / 105 PS) and 134 Nm (99 lb-ft) of torque. The engine is mated to either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. In both cases, Suzuki’s AllGrip Pro AWD system with low-range transfer gear comes standard. An electrified motor will probably be offered in other markets in the future.
Suzuki’s SUV remains quite capable off the beaten path thanks to short overhangs and 210mm (8.3in) ground clearance. Compared to the shorter 3-door variant, the entry and exit angles are almost identical at 36 degrees and 50 degrees (versus 37 and 49 degrees), while the ramp inclination angle is slightly worse at 24 degrees ( against 28 degrees) given the wider wheelbase.
The fourth generation of the Suzuki Jimny was introduced in 2018 and is expected to receive a facelift this year along with the addition of the 5-door body style variant. Maruti Suzuki did not announce a price for the model, but it is expected to cost more than the regular Jimny. Production of the model has already started at the Gurugram plant, and sales in India are scheduled to start in May 2023.
