The document says the man in the truck was immediately arrested and checked by paramedics before being taken to a holding cell.
“When I arrived in the lobby, I was completely shocked and bewildered by the state of the lobby,” the affidavit states.
The document says the impact pushed a wall several feet toward the offices of police service technicians and search technicians, but stopped before hitting any of the 11 people working inside.
Police said the accident destroyed benches where members of the public normally sat while waiting for help, but luckily no one was in the lobby at the time.
According to the affidavit, video footage showed no hesitation, stopping or slowing down by the driver before the truck crashed into the lobby. Damages are estimated to be between US$100,000 and US$1,000,000.
Similarly, the affidavit says that records show that there were at least 90 calls for service involving the suspect in recent years in which he reported “strange occurrences” that turned out to be unfounded.
paranoia and charges
The document states that the suspect was becoming frustrated with the police, hanging up on them and insulting them over the phone. The suspect told authorities that he left his home and started out of Grand Junction that morning, the affidavit says, but realized several cars were following him. He noted that he had become paranoid about vehicles and began making erratic turns and taking side streets to avoid them, according to the document.
According to police, he told them he entered the lobby because he didn’t want to be killed, saying he knew he was “dumb” but “knew what he had to do to be heard,” the affidavit says.
The man was booked into the Mesa County Jail and booked on the charges of: Attempted First Degree Murder, Attempted First Degree Assault, Attempted Vehicular Manslaughter – Reckless Driving, Attempted Vehicle Assault, Criminal Mischief, and Recklessness reckless
