Welcome 2023 – This is how much tolls increased in Chile as of January 1

This January 1st, the first rate adjustment of the highways with the annual CPI, which causes the toll and TAG prices increase by 6.7%, although on two occasions during 2023: January and July, after an agreement between the Ministry of Public Works and the concessionaires.

The MOP reported on the agreement with the highways for a gradual adjustment last December. This is due to the economic situation in Chile, for which a total increase of 13.4% distributed at the beginning and middle of the year.

Juan Carlos García, Minister of Public Works commented that “We have had a significant inflation of 13.3% this year, and that is also reflected in tolls, as it is reflected in rents and food”.

However, as a government we have summoned all the highways so that this January 2 does not have a total increase, which corresponds, according to the figures we have, and that is why we have decided that it be projected in two moments: now in January, there will be an increase of only 50% of the total, 6.7%, and the other 50% will be done in the middle of the year, in the month of July”, he added.

This decision generated various political reactions, including that of the deputy (DC) Iván Flores who stressed that “the concessions are a captive business, there is no other alternative than to go through Route 5 or through some concessioned roads within the large urban centers”.

He also criticized that the profits generated by the companies have not played an active role in the safety of drivers.

“Do you need to have 60% retained earnings in a period like never before? Do they need to have billions of net profits when everyone else is having a hard time? Be careful with this, because new concessions are coming and the ministries will have to take action on the matter”Flores questioned.
