F1 will be present in Las Vegas in 2023 for the first time since 1982, that is, four decades later. The competition has evolved in that period, so it’s important to know what it took to fine-tune the Grand Prix circuit around some of the biggest hotels in the world.
Dr. Carsten Tilke, one of the project engineers spoke on the subject for Mat Amys. Tilke works with Tilke Engineers & Architects, his father’s company that has been designing F1 tracks for a long time.
The creation process has taken nine years as F1 struggles to balance the requirements of the drivers, the spectators, the attendees and, most limitingly, the people who are in Las Vegas.
To solve these dilemmas, Formula One bought a piece of land 39 acres in town for $240 million. The track will be anchored in this area by a permanent paddock, grandstand and hospitality area. It will also be the base where thousands of concrete safety barriers will be built that will be distributed along the track.
Everything is possible, since the track is promoted by the sport of F1 and not by a third entity, as it happens in the calendar circuits. Thanks to that, Tilke Engineers & Architects he was able to design a track that included the Las Vegas strip.
“If you go to Vegas you need to use the stripTilke said. “That was our goal, and it wasn’t that easy to find a track that would work with this part of the strip included. [Había] 10 different versions, maybe, and at one point there was only one that was actually doable.”.

To locate a feasible track, they had to work with the casinos so that tourists could leave even when the circuit is used, in addition to the necessary tickets for the aforementioned hotel to continue operating. Safety for the circuit must also be considered, as well as the need for marshals and medical personnel to access the track.
“Of course, in a city, you are restricted by buildings, but we also try to make the most of it.Tilke said. “Sometimes you can influence a little [en las carreras].
