2023 Cadillac Lyriq Overview

Cadillac’s first entrant into the luxury electric vehicle market will be the Lyriq SUV, introduced by a concept car with sleek styling and a modern cabin. Cadillac says that single-engine rear-wheel drive and four-wheel-drive dual-engine models will be offered, and that its new SUV will have a driving range of more than 300 miles. The Lyriq has been designed from the ground up and will be powered by General Motors’ new scalable battery architecture; the company claims a low center of gravity and spacious cabin as benefits of the dedicated EV architecture. The Lyriq should be on sale sometime in late 2022 as a 2023 model, but it appeared alongside comedians Awkwafina, Kenan Thompson and Will Ferrell in a 2021 Super Bowl commercial. In February 2021 and another spot starring Timothée Chalamet and Winona Rider.

What’s new for 2023?

Lyriq is not only an all-new nameplate for the struggling American luxury brand, but it’s also Cadillac’s first all-electric offering. When it goes on sale, it’s going to go head-to-head with heavy hitters like the Audi e-tron , Jaguar I-Pace Y Tesla ModelX .

Cadillac hasn’t said exactly how much the Lyriq will cost or if it will follow the brand’s usual arrangement of trim levels. However, we expect it to start at just under $60,000, which is a requirement to be eligible for state incentives in California and New York.

Engine, transmission and performance

The Lyriq will come standard in rear-wheel drive form with an electric motor on the rear axle; All-wheel drive will be optional, adding a second motor up front to drive those wheels. Cadillac hasn’t discussed details about the Lyriq’s electric powertrain until now, so we don’t know how much horsepower it will make. Either way, acceleration is sure to be brisk, at least at lower speeds, thanks to the immediate nature of an electric motor’s power delivery. The I-Pace, for example, jumped to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds during our tests; we expect Lyriq to provide similar performance.

Range, charging and battery life

General Motors is launching a line of new battery technology for electric vehicles with Lyriq called Ultium. Scalable technology allows automaker to produce batteries ranging in size from 50.0 kWh to 200 kWhthough the larger size is said to be reserved only for big EV pickups like the next GMC Hummer EV SUT . Cadillac claims that the Lyriq will offer a battery with a capacity of approximately 100 kWh and should be capable of driving ranges of more than 300 miles per charge.. DC fast charging capability will be standard, but the Lyriq will also be able to charge from household power outlets.

Fuel Economy and Real World MPG

So far there has been no word from the EPA on the Lyriq’s estimated fuel economy (expressed in MPGe), but we expect it to be available closer to the SUV’s on-sale date. We’ll also have a chance to put the Lyriq through our 200-mile highway fuel economy test in the future, and when we do we’ll update this story with results. Interior, comfort and cargo

The Lyriq concept vehicle features a spacious interior with just four seats and a center console that divides the two front and two rear seats, with a touchscreen for rear seat passengers. We’re not sure how much of that will make it to production, and we expect second-row seats for three. Cadillac says that the use of dedicated EV architecture allows for a more airy and open cabin with plenty of room for passengers to get comfortable. State-of-the-art noise-canceling technology is said to reduce road noise inside the cabin, and interior designers have added surprises like backlit speaker grills and hidden storage cubbies.

Infotainment and connectivity

The Lyriq’s dashboard, like that of the new 2021 Escaladeis dominated by a giant 33.0-inch curved advanced LED screen which serves as the SUV’s infotainment system and driver’s gauge indicator. In the Escalade, the infotainment system can be controlled via a click wheel on the center console, a boon for drivers who aren’t fond of touchscreens. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and a Wi-Fi hotspot are expected to be standard features when the Lyriq arrives in Cadillac showrooms. A 19 speaker stereo system will be offeredIt’s from the high-end audio experts at AKG, but it’s unclear if it will be a standard or optional feature when the Lyriq hits the market.

Safety and driver assistance features

However, we expect Cadillac to pack it with plenty of driver-assist features, and Cadillac says the brand’s Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving technology will also be offered.
