With the all-new EX90, Volvo now has a flagship electric SUV. Under those models, the brand has the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge electric crossovers and a new entry-level high-riding EV has been confirmed. Temporarily dubbed the EX30, it’s scheduled to debut in June this year, though you won’t have to wait until it officially debuts to see it. Our exclusive renderings provide an incredibly accurate preview of the new basic electric crossover from Sweden.
Volvo promises the EX30 (name not confirmed for now) would be “very secure, decent range, still good size but smaller than 40.” This most likely means it will follow the same formula as the EX90 and 40-series crossovers, at least in terms of design. As a preview of our renders, the EX30 will borrow the front fascia of the brand’s flagship EV SUVs and will combine it with small overhangs, large wheels and two-tone exterior trim.
As mentioned above, the EX30 will be positioned below the XC40 Recharge in Volvo’s electric crossover lineup. The latter offers a range of up to 460 kilometers in a WLTP cycle and 240 miles per EPA on a single charge of the 69-kWh battery. Recently, the crossover received significant upgrades and the base model switched to a rear-wheel drive layout, making it Volvo’s first RWD in over 25 years.
We’ve heard that the new EX30 will use Geely’s SEA platform and will share architecture with Polestar’s upcoming subcompact EV crossover. Word on the street is the base versions of both models will feature a single electric motor on the rear axle, while optionally there may be a dual motor variant with more power and AWD capability. As a side note, the Smart #1 uses the same base and has a 422 horsepower (315 kilowatt) Brabus version.
This is all we know about the new EX30 so far. We expect Volvo to start releasing more teasers and early details in the coming months until the full, official debut comes in June this year.
